Comments: grilled with onions and served hot on thick pita -- was just one of the traditional Serbian dishes offered at an outdoor restaurant in the heart of Albania's capital during the summer. The venture's success is being heralded as another signal of growing economic ties.By Erlis Selimaj for Southeast European Times in Tirana – 07/10/05Perper serves a variety of traditional Slavic cuisine. [Erlis Selimaj] Over the summer, a group of Serbs found a simple way to establish a flourishing business in the heart of Tirana. Near the former museum of Albanian dictator Enver Hoxha, now known as the Pyramid, they set up tents offering a variety of traditional Slavic cuisine, lost in a fog of barbecue smoke. These modest eating places were part of the "Perper" chain of restaurants, named after the currency of Serb Emperor Dusan Nemanic. Perper, which also has franchises in Germany and the Netherlands, has established a presence in Tirana and the coastal cities of Durres and Vlora. Milisav Surovic, 40, left Belgrade to run the Tirana business, directing a group of twelve Serbs. He speaks no Albanian, but an Albanian from Montenegro helps him run the restaurant. "Our specialty is the pljeskavica. Traditionally pljeskavica is made with a mixture of lamb and beef, grilled along with onions and served hot on thick pita bread. But we also offer a variety of our traditional dishes," Surovic said. "This is a kind of a cultural co-operation among both countries. We came here during a regional fair and decided to establish a restaurant several months ago. Since that time we are very pleased with the number of customers who come here to enjoy our specialties," he explained. Not only is Perper a hit among the local residents, but it has also attracted Albanians from Kosovo, who frequently visit Tirana during the summer. Despite the legacy of ethnic conflict in the province, Kosovars still took the opportunity to enjoy the Serbian cuisine. Perper's success is also another sign that Albania and Serbia-Montenegro are continuing to boost their economic relations. According to official data, Albanian exports to Serbia-Montenegro in 2004 amounted to $2.3m, while Serbia-Montenegro exported $13m in goods to Albania. The business communities in Albania and Serbia-Montenegro are considered vital for rebuilding ties between two countries, which re-established diplomatic relations in March 2001. Since then, government officials have made a number of reciprocal visits to discuss bilateral co-operation. Ilir Meta paid a historic visit to Belgrade in 2002, the first by an Albanian prime minister since 1946. What do you think

Find out how. The Funadamentals of al-Qaeda in Kosovo: Islamization as factor of Albanization in the region of former Yugoslavia By Miroljub Jevtic, Ph.D. The Albanian assimilation of Slavonic ethnic regions (Albanization from here on) - Macedonia, Serbia and Zeta - is a fact which has been observed by all historical sources from the moment the Albanians started converting to Islam and this process cannot be separated from Islamization (1), because the conquered areas were organized on an Islamic basis (2) by the Ottoman Empire considered a universal Islamic Caliphate in the Islamic world. A well-known Turkish historian, Halil Inaldzik, says, “Gazza - the Holy War was like an ideal, a significant factor in the establishment and development of the Ottoman State. The society in these parts assimilated into a special culture and was permeated with the ideology of a constant holy war and a continuous spread of dar al Islam (the Arabic country of Islam i.e. the country where everything is ruled according to Islamic regulations – M.J.) until it should include the whole world”. (3) The rule on the established territories was based on the shariat law i.e. legal norms based on the Koran, and the most important one relating to the ‘infidel’ countries is the one based on the following Koran ayah, (namely the whole thought). “Fight those from among the People of the Book, who believe not in Allah, nor in the Last Day, nor hold as unlawful what Allah and his Messenger have declared to be unlawful nor follow the true religion, until they pay the tax with their own hand and acknowledge their subjugation”. (4) Based on this ayah a tax per capita was imposed on non-Muslims, namely a head tax or jizyah, which was paid only by those whose religion was not Islam. This tax, according to Mawerdi, one of the most important Islamic legal and political theorists, is the expression of ‘the inferior worth and the humiliation on the non-Muslims until they decide to free themselves of it by converting to Islam’. (5) What is important and what should be emphasized in order to understand the entire Albanian-Serbian relationship is the Islamic attitude towards the concept of nation. Islam does not recognize nor know the concept of nationhood in the present European meaning. In Islam all mankind is divided according to an affiliation to a particular religion. There are Muslims as bearers of the true religion, then monotheists consisting of the Christians and Jews, then polytheists or mushrikun and finally infidels or kurfs , (which gained the form of dyaur or chafir in these parts). (6) All Muslims form a community of ummah without any differences. Ummah is a religious–political community ruled by shariat. There must not be any differences between them, either formal or real. This community, as Inaldzik says, is constantly at war and its goal is to free other nations from misconceptions that there is another God apart from Allah, and from their disregard of the fact that Mohammed is his Messenger. (7) Therefore each war that the Muslims wage in the sense is a fight for a good cause since those lost must be guided to the right way. This fact is nowadays still a practice and theory in Islamic countries. Therefore the bulletin of the Cultural Center of the International Organization of the Islamic Conference states that “The conquest of the Balkans by the Turks-Ottomans in the 14th century brought justice and civilization into the region and saved the population from oppressive rule. The Ottoman gave these people complete freedom of religion and religious practice doing the same thing in the field of culture, language and tradition”. (8) This was said by representatives of these countries which, at the time that text was written, were considered to be friends of the former Yugoslavia. This is also confirmed by the Takvim, a referential annual of the Association of the Islamic clerical official in Bosnia and Herzegovina: “God has not given the Muslims the obligation of war so they could force Islam upon people, but to establish his righteous, noble and fair system in earth”. (9) The authors of both texts do not answer how a noble system can be established against people’s will but they do not have to because they do not have any dilemma that Islam means subjection and leaves no freedom of choice. The Koran says: “Fighting is ordained for you, though it is repugnant to you, but it may be that you dislike a thing while it is good for you, and it may be that you like a thing while it is bad for you. Allah knows all things, and you know not”. (10) Therefore, the Greeks, Serbs, Bulgarians, Macedonians and Albanians did not exist for the Muslim conquerors, except as Christians, namely infidels, since the Koran offers the possibility that Christians can be treated as infidels as well: “and the Jews say Ezra is the son of Allah, and the Christians say the Messiah is the son of Allah, that is what they say with their mouths. They imitate the saying of those away”. (11) As the Muslim conquerors’ attitude was identical to all the Christians at the time of conquest, not only were no serious conflicts between the conquered ethnic groups but there was co-operation and joint efforts to protect lives and freedom. An example of a multi-ethnic coalition is the Battle of Kosovo where Christian defenders were an ethnic mix of Serbs, Albanians, Croats, Greeks, etc. Two eminent Albanian historians and members of the Albanian Academy of Sciences affirm the Islamic mistreatment of Albanians at the time of conquest: “The Turkish rule in Southern Albania was a great misfortune. The Turkish destroyed and looted everything with no limitations, which was their particularity. Their 15th century chroniclers proudly emphasized that they had taken great loot in Albania, they wrote about the systematic burning of towns and villages, indescribable savagery in the treatment of the local population, kidnapping of children to be janissaries or to be sold in slave markets in Asia”.(12) Islamic cruelty provoked strong resistance by ethnic Albanians that was a resistance of the Christians against the cruel, Islam-based rule. An example of resistance is the Georges Kastrioti, named Scanderbeg, who stopped being a Muslim bey, an Ottoman feudalist, returned to Christianity, and led a war against the local Ottoman officers, mostly Albanians such as Sultan’s servant Balaban-pasha and Balaban’s brother Jonus. (13) Ironically, Ottomans were able to recruit Albanians to wage jihad against their own people and in service to the caliph from Istanbul. There could not have been any particular conflicts with the Serbs, Macedonians and others at that time, for the Albanians, being Christians by a great majority, fervently fought for their very lives and sympathized with every action of the Serbs and other Christians. As Polo and Puto said, the Albanians were trying to organize an anti-Turkish coalition together with the Serbs, Bosnians, people from Herzegovina, Dalmatians, Macedonians and Bulgarians. (14) Albanian resistance lasted only until an active Islamization begun. The Islamization of the Albanians was initiated when the Muslim Ottomans began raising jizyah, namely the tax per capita that had become unbearable in addition to physical maltreatment. Albanian historians say that in the 15th century this tax amounted to 45 aspras per year, whereas it reached the amount of 580 aspras in the 17th century. (15) The unbearable tax, cruelty and social maltreatment of Albanians were sufficient catalysts to produce massive Islamization of Albanians and an end to any resistance to the Islamic rule of the Ottomans. Subsequently, Albanian relation with their ethnic neighbors with whom they worked as multi-ethnic partners while Christian also changed. By accepting Islam in a religious State, where everything was determined on the principle of affiliation to different religions, the Albanians – but only those Islamicised – were equated with the ethnic Turks, from the point of view of the sultan, the caliph, ethnic Turks as well as their Albanian compatriots and the Balkan Slavs. Therefore they did not become Turkish collaborators as is stated in our historical textbooks but they actually became turks - where the term turk with a small t is to denote that the concept of a turk has no national meaning, but only a religious one. Islamicized Albanians also became symbols and bearers of the occupation, oppression and destruction of Christians as were the ethnic Turks. The sultan and caliph from Istanbul relied on the Islamicized Albanians and promoted them as exemplary representatives of Islam not just by high military offices but by promises of a free loot of their ethnic kin. Driven by a desire for material goods that the Koran promises to believers. (16) Islamicized Albanians ransacked and looted Christian Albanian villages. The possibility of an easy life based on the looting of their compatriots attracted other outlaw clans among Albanians that begun moving towards Western Macedonia, Kosovo and present day Montenegro. They had the full moral support of their supreme religious leader, the caliph in Istanbul, because the authorities in the capital felt that lawlessness rooted in Islam was strengthening the Islamic character of the State and helps in the final victory of Islam. Ottomans had very little loyalty to their own ethnicity and their rule was also pronounced in this direction. For example, when the Ottoman sultans took that title of a calipf in 1517 (17), they proclaimed that they were not ethnic Turks but of an Arabic origin coming from the tribe of Vadi Safa (18), because according to the shariat theory, the caliph of an Islamic community may only be the person belonging to Mohammed’s tribe of Quraysh. (19) An Albanian academician, Pollo, attests that Islamization of Albanians meant their assimilation with the Turks: “Mass Islamisation of the Albanians in the17th century caused a serious ideological schism… The religious schism undoubtedly was a serious obstacle… all the more because the theocratic State considered the Muslim Albanians to be Turks’. (20) The fact the Muslim Albanians thought of themselves as ‘turks’ is particularly important and an extremely complicating factor for the Albanian national resistance. An example is Naim Frasheri, an Albanian nationalist trying to engage in a national renaissance in the 19th century: “We are all brothers of the same blood and language. Do not say Turks and dyaur, never say this”. (21) Despite calls for national solidarity, Islamicized Albanians exhibited an extreme cruelty towards their own Christian kin. For example, Albanians that were Muslim exterminated Orthodox Albanian tribe of Suliots after a public call by an Albanian Ali-pasha Tepelini to wage jihad – the Holy War – upon them: “Agas…let us start with the extermination of the infidel race of Suliots from our surroundings and let us decisively meet the infidels… so, fellows, true Muslims, unite and swear in the name of the Prophet that we will conquer the Suliots or die”. (22) On Friday in June 1800, Ali-pasha gathered all the leaders of military expedition in the Tekie of the nakshibendi dervish order in Janina. “After ritual washing, talking the Koran from the hand of the renowned Sheikh Jusuph-effendi and swearing all those present by the Holy Book to fight against the Suliots, the sworn enemies of the Faith and State… the Sheikh read the appropriate extracts from the Koran and all present swore loyality’. (23) Encouraged to fight by a monk Samuilo whom they thought to have been sent by God, Suliots counterattacked. (24) After a fierce battle, the Suliots were conquered. The conquering Muslim Albanians killed the prisoners, skinning or burning some of them alive, whereas the luckiest were slaughtered. Wombs of Suliot women were ripped then sliced into pieces (25). The treatment of the Christian Slavs in Macedonia, Serbia or Montenegro was similar. The Albanians, being Muslims, penetrated into the parts where before they had lived in small numbers only. They expelled the Orthodox Slavs, took over their property and Albanized territories whose population was overwhelmingly Orthodox and Slav. Being Muslim made this forcible takeover of property legitimate because only a Muslim could demand protection of the Islamic State and the State did not accept Christian testimony against a Muslim. Even Enver Hoxha, the ex-dictator of Albania, attests to the Islamic legacy of the Albanians: “Brotherhood in Islam was a principle and a legal issue. In principle there had to be a spiritual and material unity between the members of the community and between the rulers and the ruled”. (26) It was important for the State, namely the authorities in Istanbul, that the inhabitants of the parts conquered by the Albanians to be Muslim so as to be loyal and reliable subjects of the State, while the national affiliation of the Muslims was not important. The results was that the vast swaths of Slavic territory in the Balkans became not only Islamicized , but also Albanized because the Albanians were the undertakers of the Islamization process. Exposed to terror, the Slavs who sought salvation could get it either by emigration or conversion. As a rule the process of Albanisation followed that of Islamisation. All those visiting the mentioned areas realized this. Says Victor Berar, a French author: “Conversion to Islam was not done by the Govornment but by powerful landowners. By the middle of the 18th century whole provinces had undergone circumcision on orders of Albanian beys… In 1740 the Slavs who lived near the Prespa Lake were ordered to become turks within three days. The Albanians were the greatest activists in the process of Islamisation ”. (27) It is also significant that the Albanians were allowed to do what they wanted without impunity and were absolute masters of the Slavonic regions. Says Berar: “The Muslim Albanians fortified the hills around that Christian and agricultural Slavonic country. They encircled the town of Prizren, Djakovica and Pristina with their fortresses and settlements. They moved towards the valleys from all these points and murdered, raped or just looted – acting as they felt inclined. Being Muslims they gave themselves the right of being owners and rulers…that was the normal attitude of Muslims towards Christians. But the Albanians introduced an imaginative approach to the exploitation of Slavs in which anger and kindness, insincere friendship and smiling cruelty were intertwined, which made them in turn the worst of tyrants and the best of friend”. (28) An American historian of Albanian descent, Stavro Skendi, himself says that the Albanian Muslims in Kosovo were less tolerant in the religious sense than their compatriots and co-religionists in the homeland of Albania (29). The well-known French historian Rene Pinon describes the effects of this Islamic intolerance of the Christian the Slavonic population and how it was reduced in favor of the Albanians. Says he: “In 1906 the Tetovo valley of Polog the population consisted of one quarter Albanians and three quarter Bulgarians. Yet only four years later the proportion was reversed”. (30) Explaining how this happened Pinon adds: “An Albanian got the land he liked due to his rifle”. (31) If we disregard the term ‘Bulgarian’ which Pinon uses incorrectly one sees that Islamic terror reduced the Slavonic ethnic regions were into Albanian, i.e. Muslim ones. The salient fact is the one earlier mentioned, namely Islam as a source of ideology and legitimacy within the State, a process which can be divided into several stages. The first is the stage of Islamisation. It was important then as to who was Muslim and who Christian, and this stage lasted until the end of the Ottoman rule in 1912. During this period, the process of Albanisation also took place because religion was used for spreading the ethnic group of Albanians and those Slavs who converted to Islam were Albanised; but the fact was not of supreme importance at that time for Albanians themselves because they had no national awareness as the concept of nationhood meant very little. According to Stavro Skendi, despite his attempt to show that the Albanians had overcome their mutual religious differences, cannot help admitting that the “Albanians from Kosovo had no inclination to renounce the Sultan whom they called baba-mbret - the king-father’.(32) Which meant that the Albanians from Kosovo were not for the independent Albania as a national state for it meant nothing to them. Skendi also underlines that, in 1908, only four years before the end of Ottoman rule, the representatives of the Young Turks Committee promised to the Albanians gathered in Urosevac that the new constitution would not be in contradiction with the Koran, that the shariat law would come into force again, and especially that their baba-mbret would stay sacrosanct.(33) The official Serb State documents also indicate that the Albanisation of Slavonic regions was less important then their Islamization. A report of the Serbian Royal Consulate in Pristina dated October 21, 1908, on Albanian crimes against the Serbs, cites a Muslim man Mahsut described by the locals as an “extreme oppressor” whose evil deeds were ascribed to the Albanians, but the report indicates that Mahsut was of Serbian origin by name Maksim Veselinovic and a recent convert to Islam, so by implication of the time an Albanian convert as well. (34) Case of Mahsut also illustrates ethnic conversion of Slavs that went right along the religious one. A great number of Albanians in Kosovo and Macedonia are of a direct Serbian descent, a fact confirmed by numerous sources. (35) While the assimilation into the Islamic community was the primary goal the acceptance of the Albanian language was an entirely secondary fact and implicit in the religious conversion. Says the Albanian academician Pollo: “The Muslims used the privileged legal status and enjoyed political rights of which Christians were deprived. During the 18th and 19th centuries that class presented itself not as a representative of the Turkish nation, but as an emanation of the religious Islamic State”. (36) The acceptance of the Albanian language, therefore, meant joining the Islamic Ummah locally referred to “turks” that also expressed the general Albanian desire to, in effect, be ethnic Turks. Stavro Skendi comments: “The Muslims from Skadar did not want Albanian schools nor their language and did not want any other official language except Turkish”. (37) Skendi adds that this phenomenon was widespread in Skopje and Western Macedonia where many Albanian families only spoke Turkish. (38) The pan-Turk feeling that was the same as pan-Islamic was not limited to religious nor cultural affairs, but those very feelings dictated the political demands of the layman Albanian Muslims so mush that, at the time of formation of an independent Albania, the Albanians denounced their State and their nation in the name of Islam. During the formative talks on independent Albania, for example, a mass rebellion of Albanian Muslim peasants occurred protesting the Albanian independence and demanding a reunion with the Ottoman Empire as one of the basic conditions. (39) Although there were attempts in the State of Albania to create a concept of a lay nation, the conditions were different than in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. All political parties and organizations among the Albanians acted on a plan on a pan-Islamic basis. The two significant political organizations of that time: Dzamijet and The Kosovo Committee. (40) both campaigned on a pan-Islamic platform and gathered all the Muslims in the neighbouring regions - Macedonia, Kosovo and Raska .(41) The policy of The Kosovo Committee was of special importance in this sense as although its goal was a Greater Albania its mainstay was the Muslims who regardless of nationality would be gathered as a later stage into the Albanian nation with the Islamic symbol. Finally there remains the most important organization: the Second League of Prizren. Sinan Hasani, a former Yugoslav high official, says that, like the previous two Albanian organization, on the basis of the idea of its chief, Dzafer Deva, the Second League had as its goal the creation of Greater Albania as a Muslim State which would be a bulwark against Communism and Slavdom by relying on the Islamic world (42). The League appealed to all Muslims and all slogans were religious. (43) The results was that national and religious affiliation were constantly mixed and the majority ethnic component, in this case the Albanians, won, but all this had an overtone of Islamic unity even then. The following is especially illustrative. After World War II the population in some villages in Western Macedonia expressed their wish to the new Yugoslav communist authorities to have their children educated in the “Turkish mother tongue”. A Turkish teacher, however, who had been sent by the authorities to do this job, sent back reports that all of them were Albanians who did not know a single word of Turkish. (44) Finally, after the World War II and with a rise of a communist dictatorship in Albania, pan-Islamic ideological domination began to wane among Albanians. Influenced by the atheistic nationalism of Enver Hoxha’s ideology one is also to expect that the newly emerging Albanian nationalism may also be radically anti-Islamic. Yet, despite the formal atheism, Islam was still used by the communist Albanian state in an attempt to amputate Kosovo from the Yugoslav state. In 1956, at the sentencing in Prizren, for example, Albanian Sheiks of the dervish orders, Sheikh Hasan, Sheikh Ramo and Sheikh Mujedin, were imprisoned for their secessionist activities and their help to terrorist gangs coming from atheist Albania. Sheikh Mujedin formed the committee for anti-Serbian activities in his tekija in Orahovac. (45) Communist Albania used Islamic dervishes for the realization of its territorial conquests in Kosovo while at the same time, persecuted its dervishes in Albania itself. The culmination of the use of Islam for political purposes could be seen in the example of the Communist League of Kosovo. For example, in order to undermine the morale of the Serbian village Vitomirica near Pec, Albanian separatists obtained a permission with the help of Mahmut Bakali, head of the Communist League of Kosmet, to build there a mosque. (46) Bakali, a formal communist and atheist, worked hard to have the permission granted because, according to him, by promoting Islam Marxist-Leninst ideology is also promoted. The use of Islam to intimidate or force assimilation of Kosovo non-Albanian Muslims such as Romanies, Gorans, Torbes, Turks, etc. was pronounced as a sociological norm for Islamic struggle by the organization of Macedonian Muslims. (47) The ethnic Turk journalist from Pristina, Aljaetin Morina, openly said that assimilating into Albanian made it easier to get a job and obtain privileges. (48) The tiny Albanian Roman-Catholic minority of Kosovo was also intimidated by the ‘Marxist-Leninsts’ so that many of them emigrated the to Roman-Catholic Croatia. One of these, Marjan Markaj, for instance, emigrated to the village of Bodenik near Bjelovar. (49) The fourth stage of Albanisation begun after the fall of communism in Albania. A research on religiousness conducted by the Centre for Political Research of the Institute of Social Sciences after the fall of communism in Albania (1990) indicates that two thirds of the population in Kosovo were religious despite professed atheism, and 70% of them were Albanians. (50) The Islamic character of Albanian separatist movement in Macedonia is, however, more pronounced. The campaign slogan of the Democratic Party of Albanians in Tetovo, Macedonia, on July 6, 1997, held a slogan “with Islamic spirit and Albanian blood”. Little different is Kosovo. The most influential party, the Democratic League of Kosovo (DLK) led by Hidajet Hisani , who had been a Leninist in the 1980s, tried to project itself as a liberal and secular one but despite its official ‘secularism’, its political identity is shaped by the head of the Islamic Community in Kosovo, Redzep Boja. Boja was instrumental in establishing Party’s Turkish links by arranging a visit for the party members to Istambul.. (52) Boja regularly allowed the premises of the Islamic Community to be used by DLK political purposes. It was particularly important that he tried to show himself as a great fighter for Albanian rights and so he announced that the Albanian national cause is always above the Islamic. (53) Yet Redzep Boja is Saudi educated Islamic theologian. He was in Saudi Arabia from his early youth where he finished both secondary school and university; and where he was taught in both institutions that the concept of nationhood did not exist for a Muslim. (54) Boja’s pronouncement that Albanian nationalism supercedes Islam is contrary to the basics of a good Muslim so it appears to be tactical in nature designed to appeal to the Western secularism in order to obtain independence for Kosovo but with a long view that once independent, Kosovo will be free to undergo Wahhabi indoctrination. Commenting to Boja’s statement in the Islamic magazine Preporod, an annonimous author says that Boja “said this without regret which I resent, for he is a representative of religion and not the nation. This is the reason why such statements by the head of the Islamic Community are harmful (55). But the author was quick to add that he is “an optimist despite all the difficulties. The development of events in Albania which had been the greatest enemy of Islam, and the creators and originators of such policies themselves now admit that such negative and wrong policies have brought much evil to Albania and our people. It is to be hoped that the remaining Marxist-Leninists, the heirs of Enver Hoxha, will eventually realize that there is no peace or good future for us, Albanians, without the Islamic faith’. (56) The situation in Macedonia, however, was different. In the interview which the President of the Macedonia Meshihat (religious headquarters), Suleiman Redzepi, gave to Preporod, he said: “there is no doubt concerning the way which the Islamic Community of Macedonia will take. Our way and the way of all Muslims is the road of Allah” (57) which means, there is a way but with no room for nationalism as the Koran states, not even for the Albanian one (58). Then Redzepi added: ‘The Albanians from Macedonia are very good Muslims and believers and I would not agree with you that a considerable number among them deny Islam. Allah’s faith cannot be denied. It is among us and the Albanians feel it as being theirs. (59) Finally Redzepi adds an absolute untruth also found also found in Albanian textbooks: “Albanians accepted Islam from the Turks of their own free will and it represented a bulwark to resist the assimilation practiced by their neighbors through the centuries’.(60) Not only did he deny the truth, but he denied the idea of a special Albanian nation in relation to other Muslims. If the Albanians voluntarily accepted Islam from the Turks, then the Turks did nothing wrong with their military occupation and the authentic rebellions by the Christian Albanians such as George Kastrioti are not expressions of genuine Albanian nationalism but an Albanian national sacrilege against the Shariat law. (61) Importantly, people who were attempting to awaken Albanian nationalism were not Muslim Sunnites but Christians: Naum Vecilhardzi, Zef Jubani, Konstantin Kristoforidji, Jeronim de Rada. Ramiz Alija , a Muslim and President of Albania, admitted to this.(62). The brothers Frasheri: Abdul, Naim and Sami who joined the nationalist cause later on were not Sunnites either but members of the dervish sect, Beqteshi, herecital from the Sunnites viewpoint and who were neither then nor are now in communion with other Muslims either in Kosovo, Albania or Macedonia.(63) It is for that reason that Ramiz Alia said: “The Albanian Prizren League and all the Albanian national renaissance activists deserve much recognition for opposing and solving all those problems that religion was creating in Albania, in the interest of the nation. Experience shows us the great damage which fanaticism and religious division have caused and continue to cause to our country… Unlike in some other Balkan countries no religion in Albania contributed to the national liberation by raising the flag of liberty… Rising above religions, divisions and religious fanaticism…..the ideologists of the national renaissance have put forward the fighting motto that the religion of the Albanians is Albanianhood’.(64) As this was valid in Albania since 1945, and as the concept of a modern Albania was spreading out of Albania, so did this idea become a part of the spoken word of the Albanian intelligentsia educated in Macedonia and Kosovo although there it was linked to a different religious reality than in Albania. This is the reason why at present Redzep Boja dare not speak openly about his goal, firstly because religious awareness is somewhat weaker in Kosovo than among Macedonian Albanians and also on account of the Roman Catholic minority and requests from the Vatican. Free of these considerations Suleiman Redzepi speaks completely differently on behalf of Albanians in Macedonia as does the Arban Dzeferi, Albanian Party chairman from Tetovo. But their intentions are clear: there is no compromise on religion- one either respects all dogmas and one is a Muslim, or if one negates only one, one loses the status of a believer and death awaits. What is clear is, that by acting as they do, secessionists in Kosovo and Macedonia are destroying the very idea of the Albanian nation and everything that Vecilhardzi, Kristoforidi and others have been working towards for 200 years. If what the secessionists want should become real, a Greater Albania would be created but only for a brief while for there would follow a settling of accounts with the Roman Catholics, the Orthodox and former Muslims turned atheists.(65) This would bring about the break-up of the Albanian nation into three disparate groups, and if Islam should triumph it would also mean the disappearance of the Albanian nation and its assimilation into the general and non national mass of other Muslims in the world

Comments: Of the origin and history of the Albanians it is difficult to write much that has meaning with any certainty. One fact only is fairly well established — that they are not newcomers. The Greeks, anxious to identify them with a race akin to the Hellenes, declare with conviction that they are the descendants of the Pelasgi of antiquity. But who were the Pelasgi ? They must have been known to the Romans under the generic name of Illyrians, a race as intractable and as impervious to civilisation as are the modern inhabitants of Albania. Doubtless, too, the Southern Albanians are to some extent the descendants of the Epirotes who followed Pyrrhus. It matters little whether we identify them with the Pelasgi, the Epirotes, the Macedonians, or the Illyrians. They are, at all events, a race which never possessed a civilisation of its own, never completely assimilated the culture of its neighbours, and always led, in spite of Greek schools or Roman roads, the same wild tribal life in the same inaccessible mountains. Ethno-logically it belongs to the Indo-European group, and probably it migrated to its present fastnesses before the Italian 229 and the Hellenic branches, which are its nearest kinsmen. The Albanian language, despite marked dialectical variations, is essentially the same wherever it is spoken — as far north as the Montenegrin border or as far south as the Gulf of Arta. It is unquestionably an Aryan language, sufficiently distinct both from Slav and from Greek, and superficially at least more nearly akin to Latin than to Greek. But it has borrowed so much from all the tongues with which it has been in contact that it is difficult to tell at a glance how many of these manifestly Aryan words it brought from the Aryan home, and how many it has recovered in recent centuries. An educated Southern Albanian employs as many obviously Greek words as a Hellenised Vlach, while a Northern Albanian exerts his

However, the policy of the new Greek state was to Hellenize all the non-Greek speaking Orthodox populations within its, then limited, territory as well as in the territories of Epirus, Macedonia, Thrace and Asia Minor still under Ottoman rule, which were though considered as part of Greek irredenta. As elsewhere in Europe, army and education were the most effective mechanisms of Hellenization, assisted by the judiciary system ready to denounce and punish all forms of behavior inconsistent with the state’s nationalist culture Kitromilidis, 1990:38; Kollias, 1994.We know that more than 60% of today’s Greek surnames can bi trace back to today’s Albanian surnames. Comments: Expulsion of Albanians"The Author: Born in 1897, Vasa Cubrilovic was a 17-year-old member of the Serbian nationalist group that staged the 1914 assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand in Sarajevo. Spared execution because of his age, Cubrilovic spent World War I in prison and then returned to Belgrade to study and work in the government of what was then the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. By the 1930s, he was a professor of history at Belgrade University, where he taught for 40 years, eventually becoming the head of his department and later the director of the Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences Institute for Balkan Studies. Vasa Cubrilovic was the author of vicious plans to rid Yugoslavia of the Kosovar Albanians. Cubrilovic first presented his ideas to the Serbian Cultural Club, an organization of Belgrade intellectuals. On March 7,1937, he submitted "The Expulsion of the Albanians" to the government as a secret memorandum. The Plan: "From 1918 onwards it was the task of our present state to destroy the remainder of the Albanian triangle [Kosova]. It did not do this. The only way and the only means to cope with them is the brute force of an organized state." Cubrilovic suggested that Albania and Turkey would be the best places to ship Kosovar Albanians. But, if Tirana objected to the deportation, "the Albanian Government should be informed that we shall stop at nothing to achieve our final solution to this question." ".to bring about the relocation of a whole population, the first prerequisite is the creation of the suitable psychosis. This can be created in many ways .including bribing and threatening the Albanian clergy, propaganda, and coercion by the state apparatus." "The law must be enforced to the letter so as to make staying intolerable for the Albanians: fines, and imprisonment, the ruthless application of all police dispositions, such as the prohibition of smuggling, cutting forests, damaging agriculture, leaving dogs unchained, compulsory labor and any other measure that an experienced police force can contrive. From the Economic aspect: The refusal to recognize the old land deeds,... requisitioning of all state and communal pastures,... the withdrawal of permits to exercise a profession, dismissal from the state, private and communal offices, etc., will hasten the process of their removal.... When it comes to religion the Albanians are very touchy, therefore they must be harassed on this score, too. This can be achieved through ill-treatment of their clergy, the destruction of their clergy, the destruction of their cemeteries, the prohibition of polygamy, and especially the inflexible application of the law compelling girls to attend elementary schools, wherever they are .... We should distribute weapons to our colonists, as need be.... In particular, a tide of Montenegrins should be launched from the mountain pastures in order to create a large-scale conflict with the Albanians in [Kosova]. This conflict should be prepared by means of our trusted people. It should be encouraged and this can be done more easily since, in fact, Albanians have revolted, while the whole affair should be presented as a conflict between clans and, if need be, ascribed to economic reasons. Finally, local riots can be incited. These will be bloodily suppressed with the most effective means.... There remains one more means, which Serbia employed with great practical effect after 1878, that is, by secretly burning down villages and city quarters." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Albalagh Home Current Affairs "The Expulsion of Albanians" No Copyright Notice. Comments: The Albanization of Kosovo and Metohia was especially bolstered by the Province's unhindered communication with Albania, from where professors came to the Pristina University in the seventies, spreading Greater Albanian propaganda. With the import of textbooks from Tirana, whole generations of young Albanians were raised in the spirit of Greater Albanianism and in hatred for Serbia and Yugoslavia. Political officials and scholars from Tirana moved freely about Kosovo, spreading sentiments and calling for the creation of a large ethnic Albania. Huge sums of money allocated by the Yugoslav federation for Kosovo's economic growth (Serbia's was the biggest share) were spent on building large state institutions for the local bureaucracy which tried to set up national institutions as swiftly as possible: the Academy of Science of Kosovo, the University, institutes for Albanian language, history and folklore, museums, the theater, television, radio, newspaper and publishing houses. Paradoxically the Yugoslav state financed the secessionist movement in Kosovo and Metohia itself.Assessing that, with the death of Josip Broz Tito (May 1980), the Yugoslav state was on The verge of collapse, Kosovo's ethnic Albanians staged large-scale demonstrations in March and April 1981, with the blessing of the Province's authorities, glorifying the regime of Enver Hoxha and demanding that Kosovo be declared a republic, since, under the Yugoslav Constitution, only republics have the right to secede. The establishment of Kosovo as a republic would denote a transitional phase toward full independence and then unification with Albania.8Ethnic Albanian national and political dominance in Kosovo and Metohia was enhanced by a large demographic explosion, as their number tripled from about 480,000 in 1948 to 1,227,000 in 1981. Meanwhile, from the early sixties onwards, the number of Serbs in Kosovo and Metohia steadily declined. According to official figures, 92, 197 Serbs and 20, 424 Montenegrins (Serbs from Montenegro) moved to Serbia and other regions from 1961 to 1980. After the secessionist revolt of ethnic Albanians in Kosovo and Metohia in the spring of 1981, another 38,000 Serbs and Montenegrins moved out under duress. Their emigration has still not been stemmed. The injuriousness of the policy of narrowing Serbia's sovereignty and deliberately neutralizing Serbs in communist Yugoslavia is best illustrated in the case of Kosovo and Metohia, where the Serbs, although formally in their own state (Republic of Serbia) were forcibly reduced to a minority with limited civil and national rights. Thanks to the organized actions of the Province's local administration, which had backing from federal bodies, the Serbs in Kosovo and Metohia were forced in many cases to leave, owing to the atmosphere of unsafety, fear and persecution. After almost a decade of waiting in vain for the federal Yugoslav bodies to stop Kosovo's further Albanization and halt the exodus from Kosovo and Metohia, a large-scale Serbian movement erupted, aided by the ecclesiastical circles and the Belgrade liberal intelligentsia, demanding that the 1974 Constitution be changed and Kosovo returned to Serbian sovereignty. The movement, which spread to encompass Serbs from all over Yugoslavia, regardless of their ideological convictions, emerged (afterwards carefully manipulated by new leadership in Serbia), prior to the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Kosovo (1989), heralding, not only symbolically, the return to the eternal foothold of Serbian national entity - the Kosovo covenant.

Comments: Since the fall of Rankovic, in 1966, the Serbs have started to accuse the Albanians of persecuting the Serbian minority in Kosova. There is no doubt that the purpose of this contention is to turn world attention away from the true genocide: that of the Serbs on the Albanians. The Serbs have also pointed out, especially during these past ten years, the high birth rate of the Albanians, which allegedly is a threat to the Serbian minority. Much has been written by foreign journalists on that high birth rate. By contrast, the fact that the mortality of the Albanian infants and children is the highest in Europe is known to very few.It is interesting to note that according to the French scholar, Ami Boué10 in 1838, Serbia's population was less than 900 000, whereas the Albanians numbered over 1 600 000. At that time the Albanians were also more numerous than the Greeks. These figures give an idea as to the extent of the Albanian genocide which was achieved with various means inconceivable in twentieth century Europe.

The ancient KERAYNIANS of the Illyrian tribe became the TSERNAIOI, the Makedo-Illyrian KOINOS became TSIONGAS. The good relations and collaborations between the old cousins Illyrians and Makedonians are still good in this part of the Balkan peninsula, a part that by now was under the Venetians, a land where the MAYROMICHALI family that originated in those MAYRO-VOUNI mountains was destinated to play a role in the forming of the new state naned Hellas. The divisions by now of the old cousins of the square are language and religion . The ones beeing Orthodox Christians and speaking the Illyrio-Makedonian-Thracian better known as Arvanit language, are on one side, across them the Muslim speaking Turkish . Since that Kossovo battle in 1389 almost 500 years went by. Five hundred years, that made some of the old Illyrians, living to the North of the river, decided that was better to change their religion, to change their language. They became Muslims and forgot the GREEKNES. Five hundred years that the people of the land that today goes by the name Albania were moving left and right in the Balkan peninsula with immunity. Manouil Katakouzinos and Theodoros Palaiologos moved plenty of them in Peloponnisos, Konstantinos Palaiologos became King of them and the in 1445. And they are still with us in 1446 against MURAT the 2nd. It was the time when they considered themselves as Hellenes from Hellenes, of the same faith, and they were accepted from the rest of the people living in the Southern portion of the peninsula. Stadmuller and the rest of the German Historians with some help from Jirecek and Slatanski were trying to make something different of those movements but they failed.

Comments: The Albanicus or ARNAUTICUS as they have been known !!Whether the albanians are the descendants of Illyrians is a matter of a great debate, it is questianable and controversial. Some Albanians nationalists and fanatics would like to think so however. Similarly the Slav Skopians, would like to think that they are macedonians, Turks would like to think they are Europeans and several other ridiculus misconceptions. The common element between all those races is that they are currently occupying Greek land; with the Turks occupying the majority of Greek land. Historians know that Albanians came from the Caspian Sea, near Caucasus. And that they mixed with Illyrians. Of course, Albanians tend to overlook that detail and assume they descent directly from Illyrians. The Albanians are from the Caucasus, originally. Caucasian Albania was located on the eastern area of the Caucasus between the Caspian sea and the tips of the mountain ranges. Old Albania was known only for wild dogs and baren snow covered mountains, for which it received the name Albania by foreigners (Alba-white). One of the GREATEST PROOFS that Albanians do come from the Caucasus and that THEY ARE NOT the descendants of the Ancient Illyrians is the Turkish name for the Albanians. "Arnauti", which means "those who have not returned" in Arabic, for the Turks were aware of the origins of the Albanians. And they truly did not return, they stayed in Serbian and Byzantine lands. In turn, the Albanians did not use any of those names for themselves, but called themselves "shqiptari". The word "shqip" has many meanings in Albanian. It can mean "eagle" or "rocky hill". Austro-Hungarian anthropologists and philologists in early last century attempted to give the Albanians a noble character nd theorized that the "eagle" was the root meaning and totally ignored both modern Albania and Caucasian Albania as rocky, baren and poor places, which would allude to the notion of the former as being the root meaning for naming themselves. Is this just a greater Serbian quasi-history to cover up the noble Illyrian roots of Albanians? Not according to a contemporary od Maniakos, the Byzantine ruler who brought the Albanians to northern Epirus. Michael Ataliotos describes the events in his chronicle: "Historia, Corpus Scriptorum Historiae Byzantinae. Impensis ed. Neberi, Bonnae". In the republic of Georgia, in the Caucasus, on the terriory of the former Caucasian Albania, from where the Avar Khanate once had its capital, there is a village named: "Arnauti". This is the name by which Serbs, Greeks, Turks, FYR-Macedonians and Montenegrin Serbs refer to Albanians in their respective langauges. There is also village in Georgia named "Bushati" - which is the name of an Albanian tribe ("fis") around Lake Skadar. There are three villages named: "Geguti", "Gegeni" and "Gegi". "Ghegheni" is the name designated to Albanians who live north of the Shkumbi River in Albania proper. The Albanians call themselves "Shqip-tari". This name is not Indo-European in origin and contains in it the Ural-Altaic suffix "ar" or "tar". Much like: "Khaz-AR", "Av-AR", "Magy-AR", "Bulg-AR", "Hung-AR", "Ta-TAR" - "Ship-TAR". Taken together with the Shqiptar-Albanian toponyms on the territory of the former Caucasian Albania, this theory on the etymology of "Shqipatr" becomes more plausable. When Aleander the Great conquered Asia minor, he took with him the great leader of the Albanian tribes and gave him as a present an Albanian dog. Among other things, Caucasian Albania did not attract conquerors, because of its poverty and difficult terrain. With the comming of the Arabs, they converted the Old Albanians in the 8th century to Islam. But meanwhile, at the time, the Arabs were waging campaigns in Sicily, dividing it into two parts, (hence there was the Kingom of the two Sicilies). In order to populate their part of Sicily, the Arabs brought with them Old Albanians from the Caucasus. To this day, their descendants live in Sicily. Then in 1042, the Byzantine Empire attacked the yong Serbian state after having defeated the Arabs in Sicily and having brought the Sicilian Albanians under their command and christianizing them. The leader of the Byzantines who led the Albanians was named Georgius Maniakos. Maniakos brought Albanian mercenaries from Sicily to fight the Serbs and they settled in two waves in modern day Albania, first the mercanaries came, and then came the women and children. After the defeat of Maniakos, the Byzantines would not let the Albanians return, thus the Albanians requested that the Serbs let them stay on the land. They settled under mount Raban and the city of Berat and from this, the Serbs called them "Rabanasi" or "Arbanasi". The city of Berat was known as Belgrad also, before the Albanians came to settle there. They mostly tended sheep and cattle and lent themselves out to Serbian nobles as brave soldiers. The original URAL-ALTAIC speaking Caucasian Shqiptar-Albanians were part of the AVAR KHANATE which had one of its early capitals in Caucasian Albania (hence Albanian topnyms there, the possible Ural-Altaic etymology of the suffix in the word "Shqip-tar" and the similarities in national costume with Caucasian peoples - the non-Indo-European Georgians, in particular). The original Shqiptar-Albanian group of AVARS settled in Northern Romania and subjugated the Latin speaking peoples of that area when the Avars entered Europe and conquered most of its Eastern part. Over time they assimilated most of the Latin language of the people they conquered, but imposed their name on their new subjects - just like the Bulg-AR tribe did in Thrace. This explains why modern Albanian has simmilarities to the Romance languages of Romania. This Ship-tar Av-ar tribe, I believe, moved south as far as Epirus from where the Avars are recorded as staging their failed attack on Constantinople. So, by the time the Avar Khanate was defeated by the armies of Serbs and Croats and Charles the Great in the 7th century, the Avars had reached south as far as EPIRUS from where they based this failed attack on Constantinople!!! In Epirus, this Shqiptar-Avar tribe assimilated the Illyrians and Hellens of Epirus, as they had done to the Latin speakers of Northern Romania more than a century earlier. While the Avars were driven out of Europe by Charles the Great and killed off by Serbs and Croats in the Balkans in the 7th century, the Serbs NEVER REACHED the south of the Shkumbi until the LATE DARK AGES. The Shqiptar-Avars in Epirus and south of the Shkumbi were left unharmed. Talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish. - Euripedes (480 ? 406 BC) -- Ah dismiri Ellas, den anastithikes ak tou tafou, apla allakses tafon: Ap' ton Othomanikon eis ton Hristianikon. --Adamantios Korais.

Comments: Ali Pacha by Alexandre Dumas pèreReviewsExcerptsA passage from the book:Albania was one of the most difficult provinces to manage. Its inhabitants were poor, brave, and the nature of the country was mountainous and inaccessible. The pashas had great difficulty in collecting tribute, because the people were given to fighting for their bread. Whether Mahomedans or Christians, the Albanians were above all soldiers. Descended on the one side from the unconquerable Scythians, on the other from the ancient Macedonians, not long since masters of the world; crossed with Norman adventurers brought eastwards by the great movement of the Crusades; they felt the blood of warriors flow in their veins, and that war was their element. Sometimes at feud with one another, canton against canton, village against village, often even house against house; sometimes rebelling against the government their sanjaks; sometimes in league with these against the sultan; they never rested from combat except in an armed peace. Each tribe had its military organisation, each family its fortified stronghold, each man his gun on his shoulder. When they had nothing better to do, they tilled their fields, or mowed their neighbours', carrying off, it should be noted, the crop; or pastured their flocks, watching the opportunity to trespass over pasture limits. This was the normal and regular life of the population of Epirus, Thesprotia, Thessaly, and Upper Albania.by David WidgerWeb site copyright © 2003-2005 Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation — All Rights Reserved.

Comments: Murik since there is no Albanian History try to learn from the people that MADE HISTORY,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Now 7250 years ago is a long time....................especially when others are telling you that your race is a race descenting from Egyptians, Phoenicians, Hebrews, Pelasgians and Paeonians from Asia Minor, Aetolians and Achaeans and Aeolians and even the Dorians that have been in inter-marriage with the ""Locals"". No sir, you can be, claim and dream of such ancestry, my ancestry is exactly from the land where I was borned. That land that is part of that square from Larissa to Ioannina to Aylwn to Durres to Axrida to Monastiri to Edessa to Thessaloniki back to Larissa. That land, with its majestic mountains that so often offered shelter to its inhabitants, from various Barbarian attackts, and preserved the PURITY of the race, that land that with its mellow winters around the lakes, nursed the tired mountainous people during freezing times. That is the land of the Vlachs. The same people that were called "PALACHEIOI" by Hysichios, the first ones after Deukalion's flood for which Aristotle in his Meteorologica wrote (The complete works of Aristotle-- Oxford Translation Edited by Jonathan Barnes volume one ) Book 1 From 352a33 till 352b2. ""The so-called flood of Deukalion, for instance, took place chiefly in the Greek world and it is especially about ancient Hellas the country about Dodona and the Achelous river, a river which has often changed its course. Here the Selli dwelt and those who were formerly called Graeci and now Hellenes"". Uhmmmmmm around DODONA !! Does anyone of you has an open map ? Do you know where Dodona was and still is today ? How far it is from DISPILIO, the land that people were having a NON PHOENICIAN alphabet 7250 years ago ? The land that was inhabited, and still it is today, by people that were called VLACHS and used to call themselves ARMONIOI maybe in honour of Harmonia wife of Cadmus queen of the land of Armonia in and around those Pindus mountains. Now you people out there, can claim your Hellenian ancestry with connections to the Pelasgians, to the Paeonians to a bunch of different races ALL of them IMPORTED from one place or another into the main Hellenian Peninsula. Myself I'll stick with the findings of Aristotle's, the findings of Dispilio, the findings of Poulianos, our world known Anthropologist who is telling us on page 122 of his book ""The Origins of the Hellenes"" : ""According to the anthropological elements of this research, the VLACHS of Western Makedonia are in their majority descendants of AUTOCHTHONOUS POPULATIONS"" !! What a beauty ! Western Makedonia was the place called GRAECIA and HELLAS. In Western Makedonia AUTOCHTHONOUS POPULATIONS were borned and formed. Those AUTOCHTHONOUS POPULATIONS had their own WRITTEN NON PHOENICIAN ALPHABET 7250 years ago. 7250 ago is a number far away from any Indo-European descents into the Hellenian Peninsula. You guys out there do you wish to claim ancestry from those Indo-Europeans or similar tribes, do you wish to call yourselves Hebrews, Aeolians Danaans or whatever else ? Fine just fine ! I am a descendant from the only autochonous people from the Pindus mountains, those first ones after Deukalion's flood, those having superior intelligence 7250 years ago. I am a descendant of those people that later were called VLACHS. The ONLY PURE HELLENES ! What a joy and what a pride !

Comments: Whether as Christians or as Moslems their lot has been to win laurels for other races. How much of the great legend of the Greek War of Independence would remain if the share wich the Christian Albanians had in it were subtracted???When one think of that various struggle, sometimes savage, sometimes heroic, two chapters emerge which have specially seized the imagination of Europe- the wars of Suli against Ali Pasha, and the exploit of the seamen of Hydra against the Turkish navy. Both the Suliotes and Hydriotes were Albanians in blood, language, and customs. They were "GREEKS" only in the sense that the Vlachs are "GREEKS" - they belonged to the Orthodox Church, and if any of them possessed any culture at all, it was Greek culture. The Suliotes were a predatory tribe, rather better organised and more homogeneous than most Albanian septs, and their manners had not been softened by their "nominal Christianity".The Hydriotes were simply pirates. The heroism and tenacity which both displayed as their normal opposition to the Turks deepened under Greek influence into a struggle for political liberty, have cast a lustre and glory upon the whole war which ought by every law of historical justice to modify the judgment which civilisation has passed upon the Albanians. As the Christian Albanians have worked for the reater glory of the Hellenic idea, so the Moslem Albanians have contributed to such sympathy as the Turks can still command in the West.

Comments:Murik your urgument is worthless,,,,Let me explain to you and your kind about the Arvanites,,,,,,,,the Arvanites and not the ARNAOUT are Greeks and not Albanian for example the Greeks that spoke Albanian were branded as Arvanites the Greeks that came from Anatolia we call them MIKRASIATES ,the Greeks tha are from PONTOS we called them PONTIOUS and the one that came in the 90's are called ROSOPONTIANS that doesn't make them less Greeks from others ,,,,,,Now if you wish i can bring evidence in this forum and she who is more pure blooded in the Balkan region but i'll give a small taste of my medicine ,,,,,For we did not become dwellers in this land by driving others out of it, nor by finding it uninhabited, nor by coming together here a motley horde composed of many races; but we are of a lineage so noble and so pure that throughout our history we have continued in possession of the very land which gave us birth, since we are sprung from its very soil.Four successive editions, constantly enriched with new data, are edited concerning the Anthropological - Ethnogenetic study of the Greek population. The basis of this work is Aris N. Poulianos dissertation, which took place in the University of Moscow, under the supervision of the famous professor of Anthropology F. G. Debetz. The research was based on the study of 70 human characteristics (p. ex. body height, width of face, skin colour, shape of eyes etc.) of about 3000 Greek emigrants (after 1949 civil war) in the f. Soviet Union from different Hellenic areas. The statistical elaboration of these characteristics in combination with their geographical distribution demonstrated mathematically (because of their low dispersion) the incessant biological continuity of the Greeks all through the historic and prehistoric epochs, which refer at least to the Mesolithic and Upper Palaeolithic periods (15.000-30.000 years). This historical continuity is also proved by the comparison of measurements of the contemporary inhabitants with those of the ancient skulls of Greece, which statistically show no differences. Despite the occasional influences and limited migrations of populations, the anthropological research has shown that the population of Greece is basically native and that the contemporary Greeks are descendants of the ancient peoples who resided in the Greek peninsula. The same study indicated that the Albanian-speaking, Slav-speaking (Monte Negro included) as of the greater Macedonian region in their majority ARE NOT autochthonous and therefore the influences from abroad mainly concerns the adoption of the chronologically younger languages, which are in use today. The interest of the Press concerning the "Origin of the Greeks" is indicatively quoted in the following publications: Avgi, 6-1-1962: “Over 150 scientists of the University and the Academy of Moscow have fully agreed with the scientific views of Mr. Aris. Poulianos, underlining the seriousness of the research, and without sparing their expressions, they spoke with praising words about him. Dr S. A. Tocarev, professor of ethnography in the University of Moscow and head of the Department of Ethnography regarding the peoples of Europe at the Institute of Ethnography of the Moscow Academy of Science. You are ignorant of the fact that the noblest and most perfect race amongstmen were born in the land of HELLAS where you now dwell, and from them both you yourself are sprung and the whole of your existing out of some little seed that chanced to be left over; but this has escaped your notice because for many generations the survivors died with no power to express themselves in writing. It is said that it possessed the mostsplendid works of art and the noblest polity of any nation under heaven ofwhich have heard tell.WHEN HELLAS WAS BUILDIN CIVILIZATIONS YOU AND YOUR ANCESTORS WE LIVING ON TREES LIKE MONKEYS,,,,,and you my friend are BELOW MY ESTATE!

Comments: The editor of Sunday Telegraph argues that Greece has been ruthless in erasing traces of ethnic diversity, and suggeste that the desperation of its actions, including the Greek claim to a"Monopoly" of the classical past(in wich all peoples of European origins have a share)can be explained by the Fact that the Greeks today are a mixture of Slavs,Turks,Greeks,Bulgars,Albanians,Vlachs,Jews and Gypsies.

Comments: " The Myth of Greek Purity "According to anthropologist Roger Just, most of the ninteenth-century "Greeks"who had recently won their independence from the turks not only did not call themselves Hellenes(they learned this label later from intelectual nationalist)they did not even speak Greek by preference, but rather albanian, slavonic,or vlach dialects. He held that their culture was similarly remote from the culture of the ancient Greeks.Their customs and habits might seem to bear as much if not more relation to other peoples of the Balkans and indeed Anatolian as they did to what were fondly imagined to be of Pericline Athens.

Comments:This is the army of Pyrrhus of Epirus, a champion of Greek civilization whose skills as a general were compared favorably to those of Alexander the Great by the likes of Hannibal, but who is known primarily for his costly "pyrrhic" victories. The kingdom of Epirus was located in the northwest of Greece, with Thessaly to the east and Macedonia to the north. Epirus was comprised of a confederation of three Greek-speaking tribes, the Thesproti, the Chaones and the dominant Molossi (or Aeacidae), with a line of descent traced from Achilles of Trojan War fame, and who provided the royal bloodlines of Epirus. Epirus found itself closely tied to Macedonia through the marriage of Philip II of Macedon to the Molossian princess, Olympias, the mother of Alexander the Great.Pyrrhus I, son of King Aeacides, was born in 319 or 318 BC, and named for Pyrrhus, the son of Achilles. His father was quickly deposed by an uprising of the Epirots, and the two year old Pyrrhus was spirited away to Illyria, where he was raised by Glaucia, the king of the Taulantians as his own son. When his charge had reached the age of twelve, Glaucias sent an army south into Epirus and placed Pyrrhus on the restored throne under the care of guardians. Only five years later, Cassander of Macedonia prompted another uprising of the Epirots resulting in the explusion of Pyrrhus.A king without a kingdom, Pyrrhus joined the Macedonian Diadochi Demetrius, the husband of his sister Diedamia, in Asia, where he gained renown for his valor at the battle of Ipsus in 301 BC. He then agreed to go to Egypt as a hostage to Ptolemy, where he made a considerable impression and was married to Antigone, the daughter of Berenice. Ptolemy then supplied Pyrrhus with an army and a fleet, which he used to secure a shared throne with Neoptolemus (297 BC). Later he was able to depose Neoptolemus (295 BC) and rule as sole king of Epirus.Pyrrhus then began a campaign against Demetrius (291286 AD) in alliance with Lysimachus, resulting in the conquest of large portions of Macedonia and Thessaly until Lysimachus interposed his army. For seven short months, Pyrrhus and Lysimachus shared the throne of Macedonia, until Lysimachus was able to depose him and secure new borders for himself. After a peaceful respite in Eprius, Pyrrhus answered a deputation from the greek Tarentines of southern Italy, who were threatened by Roman expansion. In early 280 BC, preceded by his general Milo with a 3,000 man detachment, Pyrrhus embarked an army of 20,000 foot, 3,000 horse, 2,000 archers, 500 slingers and 20 elephants, which was widely scattered by a storm. Piecing together his army and joined by Tarentine greeks and Oscan allies from Samnia, Lucania, and Bruttium, he set forth to give battle to the Romans, defeating the consular army of M. Valerius Laevinus near Heraclea along the banks of the Siris river. The battle went poorly for Pyrrhus, until the Roman cavalry took fright from his elephants, allowing his own Thessalian cavalry to fall upon the rear of the Roman infantry. He dictated terms of peace, which were rejected by the Roman Senate, prompting Pyrrhus to march on the city of Rome, approaching to within 24 miles before its fortifications and the approach of winter prompted him to retire to Tarentum. The next spring (279 BC), he launched his second campaign and defeated a combined Roman army under the command of consuls P. Decius Mus and P. Sulpicius Saverrio at Asculum in Apulia. Deployed on rough and wooded ground that hampered his phalangites and elephants, Pyrrhus fought for two days without decisive results until the Romans retreated into their camp. A javelin wound received while urging on his men coupled with heavy casualties among his Greeks, however, discouraged Pyrrhus from pressing his advantage, resulting in an indecisive campaign. Dismayed by his losses, Pyrrhus is reputed to have exclaimed "one more such victory and I am lost," giving rise to the expression "Pyrrhic victory."In his third year abroad, Pyrrhus accepted an invitation by the Greeks in Sicily, who were hard-pressed by Carthaginian expansion across that island and the depredations of the italic Mamertine mercenaries who were unemployed and had turned to banditry. Leaving a small garrison to aid Tarentum, he landed as army of 30,000 foot and 25,000 horse in Sicily in mid 278 BC, driving back the Carthaginians and seizing Eryx by storm. Pyrrhus himself is reputed to have been the first man to climb the scaling ladder and mount the battlements to engage in hand to hand combat. However, he failed to reduce the Carthaginian stronghold at Lilybaeum. That coupled with his heavy-handed attempts to suppress the Mamertines, his impressment of the local greeks into military service, and his stern rule alienated the Sicilian Greeks, who soon began to plot against him. Finding his position politically untenable, he returned to Tarentum in autumn 276 BC to find his Samnite allies disaffected by his lack of attention and the city and his garrison just hanging on against the Romans. In 275 BC, Pyrrhus launched his final campaign against the Romans in Italy, engaging the army of consul Curius Dentatus near Beneventum. Pyrrhus found the Romans unaware of his presence and attempted a night movement to take them by surprise. The confusion of moving an army through wooded country in the dark, however, lead to bad dispositions, with the wings of his army isolated from his van, which was deployed on an open plain. The next morning, the Romans overcame their initial alarm and marched forth to take advantage of the weaknesses in Pyrrhus' dispositions. The Greek elephants were frightened (possibly by a mother elephant concerned for her baby) and stampeded back through their own lines. Heavily defeated, Pyrrhus was forced to flee the field with his army. Unwilling to stand a seige in Tarentum, Pyrrhus then disembarked what remained of his Epiriots, 8000 foot and 500 horse, and set sail for home. Tarentum held out for three more years, but was forced to sue for peace and accept Roman rule in 272 BC.His treasury exhausted by constant wars, the only way that Pyrrhus could maintain his throne and army was through spoils obtained by new wars. Recruiting widely, including contingents of Galatians, he launched a second invasion of Macedonia (273 BC) against the unpopular Antigonus Gonatas (son of Demetrius), who was quickly deserted by his own troops. Again, Pyrrhus crowned himself king of Macedonia, but found himself alientated from his Macedonian subjects when his unpaid Gallic allies looted Macedonian royal tombs for treasure. With ambitions of ruling the Peloponese, and prompted by the invitation of Cleonymus, Pyrrhus then marched on Sparta (272 BC), but was repulsed. As he contemplated a seige, he learned that the Argives were attempting to overthrow King Aristeas of Argos, and rushed to assist his fellow monarch (and potential ally against Sparta). As his advance forces skirmished with the mob in the streets, Pyrrhus was felled next to the sanctuary of Demetra, supposedly by a well-aimed tile thrown by a women from the roof of a nearby house. Thus he died at age 46, having ruled Epirus for approximately 23 years. A building of white marble was raised in the marketplace to mark the spot where his body was burned, and a monument placed there with engravings of his war elephants and various instruments of war. His bones were laid to rest in the sanctuary of Demetra, which still stands, with his bronze shield hanging over the door.

Comments:Dear Tony there isn't any wreiten proof or discruption of Illyrian being the same as the Albanian language you must hve wread too much ''FALLMARAYER''well known ANTI-GREEK and pro Slav-Albanian cympathiser,,however the Epirots these are the people living South of the GENOUSOS river are from Greek stocke and only spoke Greek furthermore few dayd back i gave an explonation tho WHO is WHO...The Illyrians, according to archaeological facts, arrived RAIDING to the area of Yenousso river in 900 BC, later they were pushed back by the Greek colonies (Epidamnos, Apolonia). The name "ALBANIAN" appears in historic sources in 1080 AD. In the same area archaeological excavations brought up GREEK cities, which flourished until to Roman times. Such towns were PHOENIKI, HEKATOMPEDOS, VOUTHROTO, ANTIGONEIA (TEPELENI), PYLODIS LIMEN, PALAESTI (PALASSA), EPIDAMNUS (DURAZZO) Corinthian Colony),DRYMADES, HIMARRA, PANORMOS, OINION (KANINA), ANTIPATREIA (BERATI), OGHESMUS (ST.SARANDA), ORICUM, BYLLIS (east of Avlona), and APOLLONIA (FIERI which was a Corfu colony). In 232 BC, the HAONES create the "EPIROTIC COMMONWEALTH", a kind of ancient federation of Epirotic towns, with centre the town of Phoenici. A great military figure was the king of Molossoi - PYRROS....Despite that, today the ancient ruins give testimony of the Greek character of the whole area. Since prehistoric times the north-epirotic area is inhabited by HAONES, ANTINTANES, AVANTES and PARANEOUS tribes, who are connected with the southern Epirotic tribes (MOLOSSUS, THESPROTIANS, ATHAMANIANS, AMPHILOCHIANS and others), with common traditions and historical process. About these tribes and their GREEK origin, wrote many historians and writers of antiquitys HERODOTUS, THOUCKYDIDES, HESIODUS, ARISTOTLE, PAUSANIUS, PLUTARCH, STRABON, STEFAN of BYZANTIUM and others, who STRESS THE DIFFERENT RACIAL ORIGIN AND GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION OF THE ILLYRIANS (ancestors of modern day Albanians). Thouckydides, defines as border between Greeks and Illyrians the town Epidamnos, while Strabon gives us the river Genoussos. The Ptolemaic Claudius, said : "ARHEGONOS HELLAS EPIRUS", meaning that Epirus with it's religious centre Dodoni was the beginning (root) of Greece. The Conquests of Pyrrhus, King of the Epirots, according to Plutarch," issued in 1735, London, by Moll. Pyrrhus, one of the 15 Greek Heros from Plutarchs' "Lives," lived from 319 - 272 B.C. He was the King of the Epirots in Greece and was known for crossing over to Italy with 25,000 men and 20 elephants, and trying to create a kingdom of Sicily and lower Italy. He had numerous victories, but they were obtained at a great cost. Thus, his remark 'Another such victory and I shall be ruined' gave name to the term 'Pyrrhic victory' for a victory obtained at to great a cost. When Pyrrhus returned to Epirus, he made an unsuccessful attack on Sparta and was killed. Shows the islands of Sicily, Crete, Sardinia and Corsica, and numerous other smaller Greek islands. And this is not just BS these are FACTS

Their are also alphabets in Albanian that changed places with each other. Their are alphabet in Albanian words that have been added and some of them alphabets in words don't exist. To find Illyrian words we need too look on the Latin and Greek language and citys, we may find many Illyrian words. Look even on the map of Greece, their are citys that have Illyrian and Pelasgian origin. '''' TrueIllyrian lets asume what you say its true then explain why there is anything found thus far in the Illyrian language to prove that todays Albanians are there decent, however history tell us the Illyrians are related to the Makedonians and Thracians and we also know these two tribes spoke Greek moreever the Albanian language is formed by Turkish,Greek ans Slavic elements. And to inform you with findings in Petralona Halkidiki the theory of Indoeuropeans is dead,Greeks are Autochtonous RACE of the Balkan peninsula and NOT only have a grat day.

Comments:Sti steria den zoun ta psariakai oi SOULIOTES STH SKLAVIAThe Turks tried to get the revolting region undercontrol . In 1731 Hatzi Achmet, pasha of Ioannina, got order from the Sultan to subdue Suli. He lost his army of 8000 men. The same happened in 1754 to Mustapha Pasha and his army. In the following years Mustapha Kokka came in with 4000 soldiers, and Bekir Pasha with 5000. Neither of them succeeded. In 1759 Dost Bey, comander of Delvino, was beaten by the Suliotes. Maxoud Aga of Margariti, gouvernor of Arta sufferd the same fate in 1762. In 1772 Suleiman Tsapari attaked Souli, his army of 9000 men was defeated. An expedition of Kurt Pasha failed in 1775. When in 1788 the notorious Ali became pasha of Ioannina, he tried for 15 years to subdue Suli. In the begining without success. In 1792 his army of 3000 Albanians was eliminated. Although he had hostages Fotis Tzavellas son of Lambros Tzavelas was one of them, Souliotes under command of Georgios Botsaris, Lambros Tzavelas, Dimos Drakos fought very bravely. Even women under command of Mosho Lambros' wife participated in the battle. 2000 Turkoalbanians and 74 Souliotes were killed. The Souliotes got all their supplies from Parga but also they were supported from Europe, especially from Russia and France, which delivered weapons and ammunition. For the European powers they were an instument to weaken Turkey. When the British politics turned in favour of Turkey in order to strengthen all forces against Napoleon, these supplies were interrupted. Without support from outside and wearied by years of siege, the unity of the Suliot clans split. The Botsaris family for political reasons left Suli and parleyed with Ali Pasha. But the rest Souliotes gathered together in Snt Georgios church and decided to win or to die. They were no more than 2000 armed men. The main leaders were Fotis Tzavelas, Dimos Drakos, Tousas Zervas, Koutzonikas, Gokas Daglis, Giannakis Sehos, Fotomaras, Vikos, Panou, Zigouris Diamandis, Georgios Bousbos. Souliotes won all the decisive battles, so Ali Pasha was forced to build castles in neighboring villages and prepared for a long siege. Souliotes stayed without food and ammunition, but they could hold if a traitor named Pelios Gouses, hadn't help the turks to enter in the village of Suli. Souliotes withdrew to the fortresses of Kiafa and Kughi, where they fought tha last battle in 7 December 1803. They capitulated and Ali promised them to let them go with all their property and even weapons to the Ionian islands. 12 December 1803, Suliots left Suli towards the Epirotic coast. Monk Samuel who remained in Kughi set fire to the powder magazine and exploded. In the meantime the Turk-Albanian army attacked the other Souliotes, neglecting the promises they made. The march to the coast turned into a drama. 18 December 1803, 22 Souliotes women after dancing jumped with their children from the rock of Zalongo, in order to avoid capture by the Turks. One family Despo wife of Giorgi Botzi choose suicide in the fortress of the village of Riniassa by setting fire to the powder magazine. Yet a number also reached the harbour of Parga, which was British at that time. They settled down there or set off to the Ionian islands. When there were clear signs for the beginning of a Greek resurrection against Turkish rule, Ali Pasha saw his chance for making Epirus into an independent state. In 1820 he called the Souliotes for help, and they returned to the mainland to support their former enemy against the sultan. But Ali's plans failed. The Turkish army occupied Ioannina, and Ali was killed. The Souliotes now supported the Greek revolution, which started in 1821. The Soulioti leaders Markos Botsaris and Kitsos Tsavellas became famous generals in the War of Independence. The death of Markos Botsaris was a popular motive on European prints for the support of Greeks in their War of Independence. Many Souliotes lost their life in defending the city of Messolongi. Lord Byron, the most prominent European volunteer and commander in chief of the Greek army in Western Greece, tried to integrate them into a regular army. Until 1909 the Turks kept a military base on the fortress of Kiafa. Finally in 1913, during the Balkan War, the Greek army liberated the southern part of Epirus. Comments:I vould like this to be civilized discussion.I will post logical arguments of the origin of Albanians, and I want logical arguments against it. Albanians are never mentioned in Roman or Byzantine chroniclesAlbanians were not majority in Albania before 17 century. 2000 year old Albanian civilization" and "the Albanian people as a major contributor to the life in Antiquity" is in fact a historical nonsense simply because Albanians as a modern nation appeared several centuries later during which no Illyrian or Albanian cultural contribution is mentioned by any historical record. Therefore please keep your insults to youself then again what anyone except from you?One of the GREATEST PROOFS that Albanians do come from the Caucasus and that THEY ARE NOT the descendants of the Ancient Illyrians is the Turkish name for the Albanians. "Arnauti", which means "those who have not returned" in Arabic, for the Turks were aware of the origins of the Albanians. And they truly did not return, they stayed in Serbian and Byzantine lands. Have a nice day

Comments:Dear greek friends,if you want it or not Suliotes were albanian and with your angriness you won't change anything. They spoke albanian and this is the strongest argument on our side. Regarding your claims that they learned albanian by force(forced from the turks and muslim albanians), how come could this thing happen when albanian was forbidden until late 19 century? And albanian was not forbidden to be taught in schools only because of turkish efforts but because of greek efforts too. Now tell me how could a forbidden language be transmitted otherwise if not from mother to son or daughter.Yes, they fought for Greece with the idea that they would live free, greeks and albanians but that illusion (even Biscmarck had this illusion)was never fulfilled.

Comments: The Tzavellas family originated in Tragoge, a village on the River Nedas (Bouzi) and from there went up to Souli. My great grandmother was Evangelia Tzavellas. She married my great grandfather, Konsyantinos Melonas (Antonopoulos), They were both from Tragoge (then in Trifyllia). As to the very interesting comments made by Albanians and Greeks, I can only say that with the coming of the EU it becomes rather moot who should claim what land. Hopefully, all will be Europe. Then the fighting about Northern Epirus, Southern Albania, Kosovo or Kosova and of course, FYROM or Macedonia will be meaningless. We all enjoy the same music, food, dances, clothing and we all look alike. I defy anyone to line up ten men from all the ethnic groups and then without clues label them as to ethnicity. My ancestors were from Greecebut I really enjoy learning about the Albanians, Serbs, Croats, Bulgars, Dacians, Magyars, Rumanians, and Slovenes and yes even the Turks.I'll be darn if in 2005 I will fight the battles of 500 or 1000 years ago. Just seems silly. We should all respect and enjoy the diversity and the sameness.Lieben und lieft lieben!

Comments: What I want to say is that 1) in Albanian language, "e pirë" has a meaning = drinked (=drinked soiled, which let the water penetrate ...);2) Don't do the confusion between Greek and Helen ;3) when the first greek parliement met after the independance war, they stayed more than 3 day's to decide the official language of Greece. The choice to make was between arvanitika (=albanaian) language and hellen language ;4) the only link to hellenistic culture and politic is kept by the orthodox church which prefer to change historical reference of arvanitika's than letting greece majority people beeing with their albanian brothers together in one state ;5) the same is happening with the so-called albanian autocephallus orthodox church chief who change a lot of names of poor albanians promising greek documents...6) helen is not greek, helen is not albanian, greek is albanian...Suliotes are albanians ;7) The fortress of Kiafa = Qafa or kiafa in albanian language means nek...

Comments: I'd really like to give you all the answers to your questions but I can't, because I don't understand how people can act this way, how they can treat others in that "middle-ages" way or even kill them. Besides, if there were any answers, I think you'd be the first to know them and to let us know. And if you really want answers, you'll never have peace - then no one ever will. Nevertheless, I understand you being frustrated and having enough of all that cruelty happening toward Albanians all over the Balcans. And if I had at least one answer, I'd give it to you right away, but unfortunately I don't have any. Just to make you feel a little better: we're not the only nation that has to suffer from unjustices, think of the everlasting conflicts beween Israel and Palaestina, just to mention one comparative situation. So, tell who can be blaimed for all the sufferings and wars all over the world???

Comments:Dear readers,it's so funny to read all these comments. I had almost forgotten that there still exist people who think they are the real ancient ones of a country or a region. This is so ridiculous, so please stop talking or better - thinking like this. We are all human beings, we all need the same things in life, air to breathe, bread and water and above all, LOVE and PEACE. We are all the same, and I'm sure, we all, Albanians and Greeks contributed to history and to culture. Bad people do exist everywhere, but now it's time for the good ones to speak up! Togetherness, that's the keyword! PEACE!!! Donjeta

Comments:The story of "Greek-Suli" is the result of the good work that greeks are doing all these years to change the history in their favor and to claim more land. The "Megali Idea" has worked in the past and they hope to make it work even in the future. Suli is one of the first rocks of the modern greece surely must be of a greek origin.Do you know about the Northen Epirus Government in exile????!!!!!!. This is a well-thought strategy.Personally i am from North Epirus. I am albania AKA "LAB". We know our history we don't have to steal anything from the Greece History, but maybe is time to write it down. It is time to get out for a moment from our warrior nature, and to consider more time to the study of our history and to make it know all over the world.

Comments: For all the ignorant Greeks (apologise to the part of good greek men and women), i suggest you to read the following book which cites all foreing bright people (non-albanians), and also refers to ancient greek sources themselves about the true descendants of pellasgians, that none of you can deny were inhabiting all of your "ancient" Greece today:). Thank you!
The book is titled: "The Albanians: An Ethnic History from Prehistoric Times to the Present"
We are not trying to change today's borders, by digging dip in the history, we want more to let the truth known that this little "Albania" which maybe in poverty today is not one of the ancient populations of the ballkans, but it definitly is the most ancient population of the balkans, that has more pellasgian blood running in it that any of the other sorrounding neighbours.

Cordiali saluti Rosalie,
A very important primary source of information in regards of albanians of 14-15 cent. in Epirus or Morea are the Venetian ones. One of the authorities in this field (Venetian history) is an American scholar, Diana Gilliland Wright. She wrote a book some years ago with title "Bartolomeo Minio: Venetian Administration in 15th century Nauplion". In this book there is a mountain of information regading the period of albanian history you are inquiring about. A useful step may be perhaps for you try to get in touch with D. Wight. I think she is in NYU.

Comments: to: bua sphata: sphata@libero.it: I would like to know about the Shpata family of Albania if you are related to them. It is my understanding that Gjin Bua Shpata was one of the ruling families in Albania in 1358-1431 and that he based his principality in Arta (near Ioannina) and established Albanian colonies in northern provinces of Greece. Also, founded the village of Shpata, a suburb of Athens. I have been researching this family and would like to know if his ancestors migrated to Italy, and what year this occurred. Many Albanians from Epirus settled in southern Italy around 1476 to escape the Turks and there are presently about 35 Albanian villages in Calabria, Italy as you probably already know. I wanted to know if Gjin Bua Shpata's family also settled in southern Italy at that time around 1476 because my interest is that my husband's surname is Spata and he was born in one of those Albanian villages in Calabria, Italy called Frascineto (a small town also near another Albanian village called Ioannina (Porcile). Thank you for any information you can give me preferably in English but I also can read in Italian....Rosalie

About a year ago I recieved an e-mail from a friend about a book, titled "the language of the Gods" by Aristidh Kola an Arvanitas of Greece. He had sent me only a couple of pages, about the works of Homer and the numerous similarities between modern Albanian and ancient greek words.I must addmit that I was very sceptical since as far as I knew of the greeks were the oldest nation in the balkans and the most civilized in ancient Europe. But the more I try to find information about Albania and it's origins and the more I am convinced that maybe it might be that the greeks aren't descendants of the Hellenic culture.Although the language lines of most of the European langueges are somehow conencted Albanian has no equal,or any other similar language to it for that matter.Albanian has very few latin words, and very few greek words compared to the other existent civilizations who have been in the past under these empires. And even if Albanians do come from a different region and have just moved there in recent centuries it would be strange that there are no data whatsoever of the existence of any other group having the same characteristics with us.And we all know I think that a culture can't be born within 100 years let alone a languege totally different from it's surroundings.Regarding Suli,I would like to say that the nonexistence of borders in the Ballkans until the 20 century made possible for populations to move from a country to another and although I do not have any proof I might say that the greeks have moved into Suli(check the old map of Europe Illyricum includet the Suli region, and not a propagandistic map but the onces accepted nowdays by international hitorians.)Anyway I woul also like to give my compliments to the webmaster for web-page cos I noticed he is neither albanian and nor greek, and has taken such an iniciative.

The purpose of this site was to introduce Suli, instead we are arguing about politics. What I do not understand is: why do Greeks (those that are antialbanians anywhay) get so irritated with the manifestation of Albanian pride? Yes, the Ancient Greeks were "all that in a bag of potatoe chips", life continuesn Wheather Greeks like Albanians or not, deal with it. We are here to stay. Yes, the world may be divided, still Americans must live with Irakis, Israelis with Arabs, Irish with English etc. Besides isn't this how it is supposed to be: Albanians are working for Greeks now. What else you guys want total anihilation. Who will wor for you then? America?

In addition, how can you judge events that happened 2 centuries ago with today's mind sets????
Albanians fought to liberate all the countries they lived, not just Greece(Egypt for example, who also became the king of Egypt), so the argument that since Albanians fought the Ottomans in Greece, they must be Greek is a weak one to say the least. Beside the Population composition of Greece changed thereafter and most notable with the expolsion of ethnic Albanians from Northern Greece and also of Ethnic Greeks (of Moslem relegion) from some of the island and with the replacement of them with Orthodox Greeks/Turks from Turkey and Asia Minor. So to sum it up not the same today as it was 2 centuries ago. Don't forget the big players England, France and Russia, brough Greece the freedom from Ottomans, without them Greece would be under ottomans probably a century longer.

Why so much hostilities? My parents are from the northern greek region including Souli, more precisely father from seaside and afther from the souli region, the are both Albanian, they speak Albanian, and they both have Albanian customs and traditions. They were both born in Greece and we all live in the West adn have close to zero contact with Greece now.
I am Albanian ethnically, are you going to debate why and how i feel Albanian? I can understadn the Souliots that were born in Greece and still reside there have been assimilated to some degree. Noone is telling you to feel Albanian if you have already replaced the Albanian tradityions and customs with Greek ones, but still you can't trell the rest of us what to feel. i am Albanian in ethnicity adn very proud of it.
Also i had enough of stories how Albanians helped Greece free itself from Ottomans, if it was not for the England, France, Russia, you would
never have Greecde the way its known today, also it was different back than.

The greek-albanian community?!!?Trying to be politically correct eh?!?!?!
For prime sources about Suli or Albania or Greece, you may want to take a look on this link: http://www.hti.umich.edu/b/bosnia/
You can search the data base of library by simply tiping the subject you are looking for: albania or greece or suli or heavenly father or gli archangeli del censored etc, etc.
But when speaking about Suli, for the grekiotes, they should start their citations from time of Homer, when he mentions Selli and calls them barbarians, because they were dirty and slept om the ground.
and what Rev. Richard Burgess says he saw and heard, when travelling in albania and greece in 1835? ..."Marco's father was assasinated at the battle of Paeta, by the old traitor Gogos, at the instigation of Ali Pasha; but Marco first appeared as a leader in 1811, at the head of Chimariote Schypetari...
...he sung of arms, and accompanied his fine voice with the Albanian guitare...
...although of diminutive statute, yet when his azure eyes (have you seen a greek with azure eyes by the way- i haven't) caught fire , and his long hair floated in the wind, when upon his shaven brow there fell a ray of the sun as he sat like the shepard bou, the expression of his features was so remarkable and animated, that he might, continues his biographer, have been taken for the descendant of these Pelasgi, sons of Phaeton, who spread the art of civilisation throught Epirus...
Italia 1825"

...the picturesque costumes of the greeks- so different from those of other cuntries-give a strange liveliness to the scene of the promenade. Many of the gentlemen have adopted the European dress, but the rest cling to that which their ancestors have worn for ages. The higher class usually wear the Albanian costume, consisting of a tight vest , and over this , a short coat with sleeves slit and hanging loosley from the elbow. Comments:I read some of the comments in the guestbook. Although i'v been interested a lot recently about Suli and other Albanians in Greece, i'm not going to give facts about history. The only thing i would like to pinpoint though is that not only in Greek politics but even in the Greek people i've always noticed some sort of fear which means that in Greek
subconscience the albanian question is still hanging upon their heads like the gost of Hamlets father. And they know far to well to ignore (according to history) what is going to hapen when this gost takes its revange alla-shqiptarce.
There where some issues about Suliotes not fighting for Albania.
Answer: Albanians are not nationalists therefore where they live is their home. Albanians don't hate Greeks. Greeks insted do hate everyone. Their problem. The Albanians in Greece are not part of Albania. They are Greek citizens, albanian nationality. I am proud that Albanians have fought for Greek indipendence as well as in Egypt and other countries. I'm proud to consider my self part of hellenic civilisation to. It does not belong to greeks only. Ecpecally to the ones that live today in greece. To sum it up i will say that i think Aristidh Kola was right. What is left from ancient greece is us Albanians. And oh....fustanella is a way of expresing individual proudness. Now, everybody knows the say "As proud as an Albanian"
The last think that bothers me is the religion issue. What kind of greeks would identify themselfs with a religious doctrine that is tipical to the asians.
Answer: Only Asian-"greeks".I dont't remember ancient greece having a jewish "guy" watching over them. This is ridiculous.

Comments:Hi,
still i think that it is a matter of the past. there's a question i read here, it was: why didn't suliots fight for the albania's freedom?
there's an answer i think, they didn't ight for the albania's freedom because at the time speaking, there were no movement for the liberation of albania.
even after some decades later, the religious differencies were still present at large due to the policy of the greek state with "megali idea" project.
of course also whith the help of church policy of identifying each person based on religion, which at the time were very influential on the people of the region.
the other reason is that suli lost some of its importance ang magic.
cheers

Comments:First of all let me begin by saying that northern epirus never existed. There is a NEW EPIRUS and an old EPIRUS, but northen Epirus is an invention of the greeks who after taking the southern part of New Epirus which was the cradle of Albanian revolutions, from ancient times with Alexander, Phyrrus, Scanderbeg, to modern times with Bocari(botsaris bastardized name) Bubulina etc. What do you want to hear my dear christina, that the first Greek president was a CHAM ? That the first Rumanian president was an albanian ? Open the books and read some recent history, and from there try to trace to the most remote times, since the first man according to the legend, the Pellazg(Pelasgian) was born.
Ancient Greek is extremely hard to learn for new greeks and other people. Latin on the other hand is a joke to the Italians. Why ? Becouse there is a logical continuity, an evolution of the language, on the contrary greek language never evolved, but died out. Fallmerayer tells us, that the Greeks are actually extint, the new ones according to Latini, a Roman Historian, come from the tribe of the Seleucidae, based on antiquity on modern Iran and Iraq(not even having access to the Aegean sea). Aristidh Kola, or Aristides Kolias, tells us that there is no such thing as an indo-european race, at least as far as written history on stones, and archeology is concerned, which if i'm not mistaken goes back to at least 5000 BC, where some remote ancient goddesses of the Dardanians were discovered in present day Kosova. The Etruscan used greek letters, but so far the only language that can explain them is Albanian. The illyrians used greek letters but so far only the albanian can be used. The old archaic greek took a genious like Michael Ventris(who was killed or "died mysteriously") after he discovered the Linear B, and from those table we learn that the name GREEKS never appears in HOMER in any work of HOMER. The Hellenes, is a name of a tiny tribe that has nothing to do with major events there. Lord Byron tells us that the Athenians(which by the way is explained only with albanian as a name E Thena= speech, which relates back to the oracle) were in league with the Illyrians.
How can tribes that are in wars just like in Illyria hellenize ? They can't and in fact the Romans, the goths etc won the war easily, and the only remaining people and spoken language of that ancient civilization is Albanian(proclaimed as the oldeset Indo-European language by the Royal Academy of Sweden, since 1971, and for the first time the Greek academia didn't say anything in 2000 if i'm not mistaken when it was RECONFIRMED). It is believed that this language goes back to at least 7500 BC. The only works against such thesis come from Slavonica Studies and The institute of Hellenic studies, which their job is of course propaganda.
George Castriot Scanderbeg, one of the greatest generals in the history of mankind, who has more biographies written than every other figure(at least 2000 books spread in british libraries, french libraries and private collections) tells us to a letter to Ferdinand that "we albanians if the chroniques don't lie call ourselves EPIROTS". No one knows what those chronicles were, but we know that his brother went in Hilandar, the Athos manastir where Prince Charles just became a member, and the most ancient documents are preserved, or burned for all that matters. That's what Scanderbeg writes, and his crown resembles that of Phyrrus of Epirus, from whom we derive the name SHQIPTARS(sons of the eagle). We never called and will call ourselves Albanians. This is a modern name given by the syrian byzantines to us.
The greeks, after winning independence sent 500.000 Albanians in Turkey with the approval of Britain and recived 400.000 Syrians or whatever that is. In fact right know we are faced with the semitic roots of ancient greece :), with the similiarities of the Epic of Gilgamesh with homer :))) and all sorts of crap which has no fundaments at all. This will continue until this culture will be completely ripped off to pieces and even the modern Greeks won't have much to hold to... that's why they want all of Epirus, which means up to KRUJA, and that will never happen, becouse Epirus is and will be the cradle of our culture, of our freedom, of our civilization, of our patriotism, the land of Scanderbeg, of Araniti, Comneni, Musachi, Phyrrus, Mollosians, Olympia and so on and so forth.
It pains my heart to see how many Arvanites still know Albanian in Greece and they are afraid to speak. WHAT A SHAME FOR WESTERN EUROPE WHAT A SHAME.

Comments:Geia sou wre Soulioti Cristian,
in manchen Glazköpfen!
Aide geia xara, kai mathe na skeftesai kai ligo Ellnvilka!!
Freundliche Grüße,
Souliotis.
P.S.

"freedom or death"
Suli is more a historical issue than a present one.
In the case of Suli, there are a lot of facts, also mentioned in this site, that recognize publicly the ethnicity of suliots.
Since my German is poor, i'd like to discuss about historical events of the time suliots fought against Ali Pasha Of Janina. but in english or italian please.
i'd like to stress out again the historical moment of Suli.

Comments:hi there,
when history is called from the past a lot of things are back in the present. when talking about Suli, it is not an object of history of greece albanians or their respective ancestors hellens and illyrians.
the moment when suli gained europian attention is the 18th century.
moreover it is a fact that suliots were albanian group of tribes. christians orthodox as they kept their religion unchanged , unlike some other albanians converted to islam, or most of them.
nowdays religion is more and more a personal matter. as for the population of suli , i'm not sure that they still can feel themselves as suliots due to historical changes and of course the importance of their land is not at the levels of a time.
there can be lots of different point of views, opinions, taking in consideration the interests and the knowledge of everyone who's taking part of this guestbook's kinda discussion.
thanks & best wishes to everyone

Comments:Epirotians are the oldest Greek tribe. Our history begins 5.000 years B.C. Our land is situated in the Balkan peninsula between the North Western part of Greece and the South of Albania. The northern part of our land, the known NORTH EPIRUS is occupied by the ALBANIANS from 1914.
Ancient period: Our classic ancient history is dominated by the unification of the GREEK Epirotic tribes by the MOLOSSIAN (Epirotic tribe) King NEOPTOLEMOS in the early 1.900-1.550 B.C. The capital city of the ancient Epirotian kingdom was PASSARON. Some ruins of the city are located today near the modern capital IOANNINA.The niece of the Molossian King ARYBBAS, the beautiful OLYMPIAS was married with the King of MACEDONIA PHILIP II and gave birth to our national hero, the famous ALEXANDER the GREAT.
King Pyrros:The biggest King of Epirus was PYRROS. He contributed to the development of the region with the construction of temples and cultural buildings but his major occupation was the teritorial enlargement of Epirus. Inspired by the campaign of Alexander the Great in Asia, he planificated a similar campaign, in the west. He invaded Italy and confronted, the Roman Army. He won a lot of batles but after the excausting of his army by several diseases he was forced to return in Epirus. Then he enlarged Epirus in the south, occuping several territories. He was assasinated young in Pelloponisos.
Medieval Period: The next important historical period for Epirus, was during the Middle Ages. The Vyzantine Empire contribute to the development of the region, thousands of impressive churces were built all over Epirus. The Emperor JUSTINIAN founded in 527 A.C. the city of IOANNINA which became the capital of Epirus. During the Latin occupation of Greek Vyzantine territories, the habitants of Epirus confront the Catholic invaders and established a free kingdom. This kingdom was known as the DESPOTATE OF EPIRUS with capital the city of ARTA and first leader the prince MICHAEL KOMNINOS.

Comments:Hi Christina,

Comments:I saw this page too late, but here are my short comments.
I was in Greece and met an Albanian christian who claimed he was an arvanites. Married to a Greek somewhere near Vollos. He was afraid to tell people he was Albanian. You have hundreds of thousand or maybe just thousands Arvanites who still speak Albanian in your homeland. Why not a single village has come out to say they are Albanians like in Italy? I cannot think there are more Arvanites in Italy than in Greece, really. I think they are afraid of being deported or imprisoned, or I do not know what. In the Europe of today and tomorrow there is no room for such things and a country who does not allow at least a mosque (disclaimer: not a moslem). Second, but not least: there are Greek organizations half supported by the state or in silence supported by many Greek officials who still want to annex Southern Albania to Greece, representatives of which in the last years have crossed the borders of Albania and killed soldiers inside Albania, spread pamphlets to promote greek people even in my city, Shkoder which is at the border with Montenegro and trying to change through the Greek Orthodox priests the typical Albanian orthodox designs in the churches in Albania, organizations who still instill in our country the fear that southern Albania can be claimed one day by Greece. We may have single Albanians who say Souliotes are Albanian, but we do not have a single extremist organization, nor do maintain these ideals in Albania. While you in line with the attitude toward Albanians have a list of suspicious behaviors, Albania may have most unrelated desperate behavior in no way related to Albanianism.
The way Greek organizations and the Greek government behaves toward Albanians and others today, makes me fear the time until 1912 when the Greek (I forgot his title but was the highest clergy of Greek orthodox church) warned any Albanian language not to be spoken, otherwise whoever would speak Albanian would be excommunicated. This is not at the time of Homer, but readily to be proven.
We have what to fear from some of you, and in that respect of Albanianism you can fear nothing from us. This is one of the conclusions I draw, for which I devoted some time. I only cherish great sympathies for the Greeks I met in Greece, when I was an illegal immigrant, 17-years-old and doing what I had no idea I was doing. Now I am a respected professional and one person I met in Greece has largely inspired me.
I love the Balkans.

By the way, why does Greece need Macedonia ?
Rewrite what was left, and Macedonian and Albanian lands have so much to offer to disprove all the present british made theories.
If only the King of Greece wouldn't have married the Queen of England, God only knows if the Syrians(Greeks) would have made it to become what they are today, which is not much, but it's more then enough for a syrian race.

I didn't understand the story of the souliotes being "greek"?
The Souliotes are all Albanians, and are they who helped achieve the independence of Greece, Modern Greece.
As for "Piana dei Albenesi" was named after the Pelasgian stones that were found, linking directly to an Illyrian-Pelasgian civilization instead of what was thought before, meaning Greek.
The first prime minister of Italy was an Albanian Arberesh, the first president of Greece, Coundurioti was a CHAM(the people that were brutally massacred by the greeks after WWII). The first president of Roumania was an Albanian of the large community that lives there. The first king of modern Egypt was an Albanian as well, Muhamed Ali, a dynasty that lasted 200 years. And by the way according to Catapano, and many others the Ptolemy dynasty is Illyrian as well. The Despotate of Epirus is the most important part of Albanian history. It was the last piece of the Balkans that fell when Gjon Kastrioti(son of Scanderbeg) left from Himara to Italy in retreat, never to come back to his homeland.
Before giving misinformation about Greeks, espeically the modern ones who in language have nothing to do with the ancient(and as a matter of fact the ancient language is not known how it's spoken let alone claim heritage) read about history from an objective standpoint, both Italians and Greeks, and realize that there is much both have in debt to present day poverty striken Albania.
In the end the Latin Alphabet that Italians claim as theirs, is nothing more but the Etruscan Alphabet, which the only language that seems to decipher those writings seems to be Albanian as well(not the one spoken in Albania, but the one spoken by the Arberesh who have preserved a purer form). According to Titius Livius, up to the 3rd century BC, the ROman Emperors were REQUIRED to learn Etruscan Culture, the "estinguished culture" who has left surprisingly only tomb writings.

Hallo everybody!
I have an origin from a village near Souli, I do not know whether I do come from Souli, but I am a little concerned about all this argument on what is Greek and what is Albanian etc.
In the Balkan region, but also all over Europe, depending on the historical facts and situation of each period, there were great numbers of people moving from one region (as there were no countries as we know them today) to another.
So, I do not believe that anybody can tell where exactly he comes from, except if we are talking about the last century only.
About the Albanian names in Epirus, as you may know under the Ottoman Empire when Turks where in Greece, there were many Albanians moving south and the names in many places have Albanian and even Turkish origin, but that is absolutely normal for that time. Should we change all names in order to show what? That we are pure and untouched by other nations? This is not the case for any European nation.
The Balkans was always a place of nations' mixture that is not bad at all; it could be a good start for understanding each other.
Any way, what is the big deal about it? Even if I (or you) believe that Albanians, or Germans or any other country is in fact Greeks or Chinese, what really matters is what one believes for himself and how he identify him self. In many cases of course, the history presented by one side or the other, is fictional and serving the political interests and not history, so we better study more before saying anything about what we thing we know.
Shouldn’t' we concentrate on the future? We do have so many problems (economic, educational etc., and I do not mean Greece but the area in general) that we should solve and then we can have the luxury of arguing for ever about our ancestors who are long gone and I am sure they do not care at all about our fights!
Have a great New Year!
Mary

Comments:Hi suliots,
Cordiali saluti

Comments:Hello all,
My family comes from Ithaki. By my surname, Kara- Soulas, I gather we originally came from Souli in Epirus. Does anyone know more about how my name was created?

Why is there so much hatred against the Greeks when the Albanians do not even like their own. They are divided in their own country and despise eachother. Settle the problems in your own country before claiming Ellada. I really don't understand the need to translate everything when we don't really care what it means in Albanian because the true meaning is always the Greek one. Have a GREAT Day!

Comments:Hello Souliotes from all over the world! The grandfather of my grandfather was named Fotis Pantoulas. He was in the team that left Souli and moved towards Boulgareli of Arta. I am searching to find the nucleus - the first man to be named - of Pantoulas. The tree goes like this: Aikaterini Dimitriou Pantoula -> Dimitrios Georgiou Pantoulas (my father) -> Georgios Dimitriou Pantoulas (my grandfather) -> Dimitrios Fotiou Pantoulas (my grandgrandfather) -> Fotios Pantoulas (my grandgrandgrandfather). This is how far I have reached. If anyone knows something please send me an email. I would be grateful!
Souliotes of all over the world be united!!!

The Peaks of Suli, like the rest of the Albanian/Illyrian Peninsula, has a very rich history.
For all my friends here that seem to be confused about their ethncity or the ethnicity of the Epirotes, maybe this can help them a little.
In his very well respected book, "Harpers Dictionary of Classical Antiquities", Harry Thurston Peck writes:
"The inhabitants of Epirus were scarcely considered Hellenic. The population in early times had been Pelasgic. The oracle at Dodona was always called Pelasgic, and many names of places in Epirus were also borne by the Pelasgic cities of the opposite coast of Italy. But irruptions of Illyrians had barbarized the whole nation; and though Herodotus speaks of Thesprotia as a part of Hellas, he refers rather to its old condition, when it was a celebrated seat of the Pelasgians, than to its state at the time when he wrote his history. In their mode of cutting the hair, in their costume, and in their language, the Epirotes resembled the Macedonians, who were an Illyrian race."

Who was Harry Thurston Peck, you might ask, well he was the Dean of the Antiquities Department of Columbia University, in New York.
