The Ukrainian city of Chernivtsi - the former Czernowitz - celebrates. 600 years ago the town was mentioned for the first time. In 1775 it became a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, after WW I a part of Romania. In WW II the city and its inhabitants suffered under Soviet, German and Romanian occupation.
The city authorities make big efforts for the anniversary. Facades get renewd and painted. And there is a growing conciousness that Czernowitz was once a multinational community of Jews, Germans, Romanians, Armenians, Russians, Poles and Ukrainians. It could become a blue print for a future Europe again.
