Czernowitz, Jewish cemetery

An international work-camp took place in the Ukrainian city of Chernivtsi - the former Czernowitz - in August 2009. Volunteers from Poland, Germany, Finland, Switzerland, Croatia, Austria, Czech Republic, Japan and the USA cleaned up the Jewish cemetery. They were joined by locals and the city authorities supported them by community workers, free hosting, advice and transport.
The work-camp was organized by SVIT Ukraine and supported by SCI Germany.
The Jewish cemetery of Czernowitz is one of the last undestroyed Jewish cemeteries in eastern Europe. Neglected since decades the cemetery is overgrown by weeds, bushes, creeppers and trees. The volunteers brought parts of this gem into daylight again.
The work-camp is part of an initiative for the rehabilitation of the Jewish cemetery of Czernowitz. It is an follow-up of a work-camp by SVIT Ukraine in 2008 and another one by Aktion Sühnezeichen Friedensdienste earlier in 2009.
